Hemodialysis Types:

Conventional Hemodialysis: (For people with CKD)

Ideally, you should do it twice a week, if not three times. An average session lasts between three and four hours. The blood is extracted using a tube that is fastened to a dialysis catheter. After being cleaned, the blood is reintroduced into the patient’s body through another tube.

Hemodialysis frequency in ARF/AKI varies based on renal function and is transient.

Hemodialysis Every Day:

For patients who would rather carry out their dialysis at home, it is advised. It is done five to six days a week, for two to four hours each session. It works great with catheters but becomes a little tricky when using fistulas or grafts. Some patients prefer to have nocturnal hemodialysis solely at night while they are asleep.

How long does each hemodialysis session

In a dialysis facility, hemodialysis is often done three times a week for around four hours at a time. Hemodialysis patients who perform it at home might have to do it four to six times a week for shorter periods each time.

Your doctor will prescribe a medication that details the duration of care you need. Your dialysis care team will conduct monthly lab testing to make sure you are getting the right dosage of dialysis. Visit our Best Hemodialysis Center in Chennai dialysis facility.

Can I receive hemodialysis in the comfort of my own home?

Maybe. Hemodialysis treatments are often administered to patients in the convenience of their own homes.

How does hemodialysis operate and what is it?

Hemodialysis is a blood purification process that employs a dialyzer, sometimes known as a synthetic kidney and a life support system. The doctor must gain access to your blood vessels to insert your bloodstream into the dialyzer. Minimal surgery is required to accomplish this, and it is often done on your arm. Dialysis FAQs

In simple terms dialysis can be described as a blood purification procedure. It is done for patients with various types of kidney diseases in the advanced stage when other modalities of treatment like medicine and diet restrictions fail. During dialysis various toxins which accumulate in renal failure are removed and water and electrolyte imbalances are corrected.
It is a lifesaving procedure for patients with renal failure.

Dialysis is of 2 types:

  • Hemodialysis
  • Peritoneal dialysis

In Hemodialysis (HD), patients’ blood is passed into a hemodialysis machine for purification. During this process various toxins which have accumulated in renal failure are removed and water and electrolyte imbalances are corrected. This procedure is done two or three times in a week, each procedure lasting for four hours.

In peritoneal dialysis, peritoneal dialysis catheter is surgically placed in the patient’s peritoneal (abdomen) cavity. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluid is transfused into the peritoneal cavity through the PD catheter. The peritoneal membrane (covering of the abdomen cavity) acts as a filter to remove toxins from the blood. The peritoneal fluid containing the various waste products and excess water is drained out after a period of 3 to 4 hours (dwell time).PD can be done by the patient alone or with the help of caretakers at home. HD is usually done in a hospital setting.

Yes, Patients with renal failure on dialysis can lead a healthy life by following the Nephrologists (Kidney specialist) advice on diet, medicines dialysis.

Renal failure patients on dialysis should restrict the salt intake (3g/day). They should restrict intake of liquid items to 1-1.5 liters per day according to their urine output. Liquid intake includes water and other foods consumed in liquid state like soup, buttermilk etc. During the dialysis procedure amino acids (building blocks of protein) are also removed from the body. Hence, patients on dialysis should consume protein rich diet, to avoid malnutrition. They should also restrict food items rich in potassium and phosphorous.

In general, patients with chronic renal failure (slowly deteriorating kidney function over months to year) due to chronic diseases like diabetes will need dialysis for the rest of their in advanced stages of renal failure. Alternatively, they can undergo Renal transplantation surgery (kidney from a healthy donor is surgically placed in the abdomen of patients with renal failure).

In some type of renal diseases the deterioration of kidney function happens abruptly (days to weeks) requiring dialysis. If the underlying disease which causes renal failure is effectively treated, these patients with acute renal failure can regain normal kidney function and dialysis can be discontinued.
